Chapter 10: Proverbs 23:27-28 - The Cell Next Door
By Dylan Tallman
For a harlot is a deep pit, and a seductress is a narrow well. She also lies in wait as for a victim, and increases the unfaithful among men.
Mail time was just as usual as any other day. The sergeant did his round with a stack of mail and delivered all of the letters through Chris's door, cell 14. As expected, he walked past my cell, number 13, without stopping. Typical. I didn't get any email today, so let me live my life through you again, bro. I told Chris through the electrical outlet on the wall. He was quieter than usual. “This chick from Chicago just wrote to me saying that I should tell everybody the truth and that I should have been given the death penalty.” Chris said. He would sometimes receive hate mail mixed in with the fan mail. He remained quiet for a while after that. I was writing a letter to my mom when Chris called me over to the electrical outlet on the wall. “This other woman wrote to me. She's from California, 29, blonde, 125 pounds, 55, blue eyes. She says she's looking for a long term relationship. Her hobbies are watching television, tanning, going out with friends, playing beach volleyball, shopping, and rescuing animals from abuse.” “Okay, this woman is kidding or something, because this is not an episode of "The Bachelor.” This is more of an episode of love after prison, except we're still in prison,” I said. He and I laughed. Were these women serious? It never ceased to amaze me how these women threw themselves at Chris on a daily basis.
However, had a ton of people that hated him just as much. People who were parents with children especially had hatred for him. Then other mothers with children loved him at the same time, which could be confusing. “Then there's this one guy that wants to buy some memorabilia. He collects serial killer memorabilia,” Chris said. “Selling something?” I laughed. “No, I'll have to pass on that one. It's going to be a hard pass, actually,” he replied. I can understand why he wouldn't want to entertain that offer. "He would then feel associated with the character, the monster that people thought he was. Fan mail hour was one of my favorite times of the day. Now we were going to work on our book series called “God's Plan.” The fangirls wanted to marry him while his haters wanted to bury him. So, I was reading through the Black’s Law Dictionary again when I saw change a venue. I had read it to him before, but I realized this could probably be the ticket to get him to appeal because he says his reasoning is that he doesn't want to go back to Colorado. A change of venue would get his new trial heard somewhere else. I called over to Chris and explained this to him again. That is what led us to discussing his case yet again.
The cell I was in was hot as hell, and it was humid. I didn't even have a fan like Chris did. He was staffed at Dodge. Whereas I was only being housed there. I was prohibited from purchasing products, such as electronics, clothing, shoes, or anything else. “Hey bro,” I called over to Chris. The CO who was up at the desk and done with this round. Some of the COs got on us for talking, and this prick was one of them. “What's up?" Chris replied. "If you were given a chance to get a retrial somewhere else, would you appeal your conviction?” I ask him. He paused, perhaps thinking it over. "I'm going to appeal," he promised, "Me walking out of these gates would be a testimony from God, and then my mom would believe.” He replied, "I will walk out of these gates one day,” he added. “Do you think if you get out that you will contact Nicole or Jezebel?” I asked him. “Not a chance.” He rapidly fired back. "I see," I said. This woman really pushes his buttons, and I was about to push the more. “What if she says that she never stopped loving you and she was just scared, which is why she disappeared?” I pushed. “She's proverbs 7:26-27. Look up what that means, and that is my answer to that one.” Chris answered. I next looked it up in the Bible, and that is as far as we got on the subject of her that night.
Proverbs 7:26-27
For she has cast down many wounded, and all who were slain by her were strong men . Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death.
I read it twice and I knew he was trying to tell me something. Wait a minute... This was his second time defining her by these proverbs. He was indeed telling me something.
