Chapter 11: Proverbs 6:26 - The Cell Next Door
By Dylan Tallman
For by means of a harlot , a man is reduced to a crust of bread; and an adulteress will prey upon his precious life.
“What do you mean that this detective wants to help Chris?” I asked Christa while on the phone with her. There was a pause. "Are you going to answer me, this call is almost over?” I asked her. “He's a retired detective, but he has contacts who can help.” She explained. "If he is retired, then what does he do now?” I asked. “He actually has his own YouTube show.
It's called Armchair Detective." She admitted with confidence. "I knew it," I replied, "I can tell you Chris's answer without even asking him.” I answered her question. "Just let him know that he's my friend and just wants to talk to him." She insisted. "You have one minute left the operator warned.” "We said our goodbyes. I was debating whether or not I would ask Chris about this AD’s guys request. Day room ended early because another inmate got into an argument with the CO. We were all ordered to lock into our cells, including the inmate who was arguing. Next, a captain and four COs, including one sergeant, arrived. The woman sergeant ordered the guy to cuff up, and he would be going into unit 18, segregation. “How about I put you in a boski and beat that d*ck up,” the guy said instead of cooperating with him. The guy said. So, the guy yells at the CO and makes a sexual comment. Eventually, the guy put his hands to the trap in the middle of the door, and he was cuffed in the back. They then escorted him out of Unit 11 and down the long corridor of Dodge to Unit 18.
When the drama cleared, Chris and I did our workout since we didn't have recreation that day. It was pushups and crunches. After that, we started talking about life in general. Our walks in life were very different. He had never been in trouble in his life. He was a great guy, a respected member of society, had a great job, and married and had kids. Chris was everything I wasn't. I started selling drugs when I was 10 years old. I started gangbanging when I was just 12 years old. I started having sex when I was 12. I grew up in violence. My father and stepmother died when I was just 14. I got locked up at 14 and didn't get released until 18 months later. I ended up in adult jail at 16 years old. I was in and out. Guns and drugs were like magnets to me, as were the police. I went in at 19 years old and I was sentenced to 17 years. Seven of those initial confinement and the other 10 were extended supervision. I got out in 2016 for only two months when I was locked up for more drug charges and fleeing from the police and of course, resisting. I was revocated on my extended supervision for three more years of imprisonment.
In 2019, I was released again for two months. When DTF had surrounded again, however, they only found six pills that they identified as ecstasy, nothing else. Still, I served two years on revocation for my extended supervision. I was not even bound over for trial yet on that case when I went to prison for violating my extended supervision. The system in the state of Wisconsin is horribly flawed.
Other states will wait until you are convicted of a crime before sending you to prison for violating probation. However, in Wisconsin, you will be sent to prison before you are convicted of a crime if you are on probation, parole or extended supervision. It's truly unconstitutional. I came from a completely different walk of life than Chris. Our intellect and spiritual insight were both on a similar level though. We liked a lot of the same things. What made us click was our passion for the Lord. We both sought forgiveness and search for that higher power. We went to the chapel a lot, and we also had our own Bible study, which took place all of the time in our cells. The spirit was strong upon me in 2020. Today it is not as strong.
I was telling Chris about a few recent brief encounters I had with women prior to my arrest. “I really like this one woman in particular, but she has some issues,” I told Chris through the electrical outlet in the wall. “Yeah, I know what that’s like, what type of issues?” he asked. “She was a nice, good looking girl except when she was on drugs. When she on drugs, she turned into a psycho and a sex addict. She tried to stab me a few times.” I told him. "Lord Jesus," Christ replied, "What happened when she tried to stab you? “I just took the knife from her and calmed her down," I replied. "That easy, you just disarm her, and then you're able to sleep next to her?" he asked. "Yeah, pretty much.” I answered. "See, the one time I am in a situation like that, then all of this,” he managed. “I had another psycho just before that, and shortly after that, I need a normal woman," I said, "What about Christa?" Chris asked me. “Christa claims that a retired detective wants to talk to you.” “Who?” he asked rather quickly. "I had to rack my brain for a bit to remember his name. “AD, Armchair Detective,” I remembered, “Absolutely not.” He has caused my family and I enough problems.” he replied. “How about you let me talk to the guy and see what he wants to ask? He has a YouTube channel, perhaps we can spread the word of the Lord and possibly market our books,” I suggested. Chris was quiet for a minute, perhaps pondering this idea. “Joseph, son of Jacob, used Pharaoh to help his people. Perhaps we can open the door for the enemy and use their lairs for good.” Chris proposed. I thought it sounded brilliant.
The YouTubers and the media were obvious enemies to Chris. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with the media in any form. However, through a third party, things could possibly be different. “I got this,” I promised him. Christa had better be right about this guy. I was going to talk to him.
