Book One: The Pink Cadillac - Chapter 2 - The Pink Cadillac
By Rebecca Harlem
Scarlett walked away from the police station building, pulled out her phone and dialed her Mexican boyfriend, Victor Burgos, while walking down the street. Victor was a partner in a major law firm in Houston. Scarlett had hired the law firm to settle property disputes with her step-siblings after her father, Alonso Barros Garcia, died unexpectedly a year ago without leaving a will. Scarlett began to like Victor after a few meetings with him, and they soon began dating.
“Honey, I was trying to call you,” Victor said. “Did you file the complaint?”
“Yes, dear, I was sitting in front of the officer in charge when you called. I’m sorry I didn’t answer your call.”
“It’s all right, honey. I’m on my way to pick you up. I’ll be there right away.”
A breeze-blue Bentley Mulliner Bacalar appeared out of nowhere and came to a halt close to Scarlett. Victor smiled at her from behind the windshield. Scarlett admired his smile and curly hair. Victor pressed the accelerator as she sat inside the car. He knew that Scarlett was upset because her car had been stolen. He intended to take Scarlett to his house that evening and make her happy by making love to her.
Scarlett and Victor were naked in Victor’s bed around six o’clock in the evening. They were passionately kissing each other. Scarlett’s eyes were filled with sadness that day. Victor was playing with her hair. Scarlett’s left hand was clutching Victor’s penis. And she was twisting it as if she were trying to shift gears in her Cadillac. Victor touched Scarlett’s lips after pointing his finger to his penis, but she refused to give him a blowjob. He didn’t force her because he knew she was upset. Then everything went exactly as Scarlett’s wishes. Victor buried his desires in his heart and completely surrendered.
He did it the majority of the time when they made love. But he felt Scarlett was never happy after that. She became sadder than before. They had been together for a long time, but Victor was aware that there was some strange aspect of Scarlett’s personality that was still undisclosed to him.
Around 9:00 p.m., Scarlett and Victor were having dinner. Victor himself had prepared Scarlett’s favorite enchilada. He persuaded Scarlett to spend the night at his house. Scarlett refused because she wanted to return home. Victor drove Scarlett to her home in his Bentley.
While Victor and Scarlett were enjoying dinner together, Theo was watching TV and sipping beer in his apartment. He turned on MTV and saw some bikini-clad chicks dancing and wiggling their asses to loud dance music. Theo quickly changed the channel. He turned on the Discovery Channel. A documentary on the Museum of Classical Archaeology was being aired, where he saw some ancient Greek and Roman sculptures with naked bums. Then he changed to a news channel where a farmer was displaying a massive butt-shaped watermelon. “Damn,” Theo murmured, “why are the asses haunting me these days?” He switched off the television.

The next Sunday, Scarlett’s maid was cleaning a room that was rarely used. She discovered an antique wooden box containing pictures from Scarlett’s school days. She handed it over to Scarlett. Those pictures were captured with a Polaroid camera. Scarlett sat on the couch and began going through the photos one by one. One shot in particular drew her eye. Scarlett couldn’t take her gaze away from it. She stared at it for quite some time. Her heart sank with sadness and tears welled up in her eyes. In the background, a vinyl player was playing John Waite’s classic song ‘Missing You’.
