Jess has always been a runner—accustomed to bouncing between detention centers and behavioral 'special schools.' Always looking for her next escape, her first plan of action when she receives a scholarship to the prestigious Danvers-Cutteridge school, hidden deep in the mountains of West Virginia, is to find the fastest way out. However, Danvers-Cutteridge hides dark secrets behind its grand staircases. A student has recently gone missing, and Jess's new friends suspect that the administration is covering up the truth. As Jess searches for answers and an exit route, she begins to uncover the school's unsettling history: the facility was once a psychiatric hospital where horrific abuses were inflicted on past residents, and a fearsome local legend has haunted the valley for decades—the tale of a mysterious 'girl in green.' As Jess and her friends dig deeper, their investigation pulls them down into the closed-off, forgotten underground tunnels of the school. Soon, they learn that the chilling folklore might be all too real, and walls of iron and stone may not be enough to keep the hungry darkness at bay.
