JJ Wyróżnicka-Johnson is a high school junior and cheerleader who moved from Poland to Massachusetts two years ago. Desperate to fit in as an 'all-American girl,' she has buried her accent and dropped her hyphenated name, but she desperately needs a partner to keep her spot as a flyer. Aang Lau is a Chinese-American math nerd who previously kicked JJ out of the math club. Disillusioned with trying to fit into American culture, he is leaning heavily into his roots and wants to win Mathletes nationals to secure a gateway to Stanford. After a panicked guidance counselor meeting, the two strike an unexpected bargain: JJ joins Mathletes, and Aang joins the cheerleading squad so they can help each other win two national titles. But as they navigate stunt practices, math equations, and the complexities of their immigrant identities, old animosity slowly turns into something much deeper.
