Chapter 41 - Life
By Claire Highton-Stevenson
Wandering into the kitchen the following morning, Cam found Kate cooking breakfast. An array of goodies was being fried, grilled, and toasted, and the smell was amazing. She’d definitely worked up an appetite.
“There better be some for me,” Cam said. “It’s the least you can do for waking up the household last night.” She smiled at the memory.
“Oh, god, I told him to be quiet.” Kate said, turning quickly, spatula in hand. “Seriously, he didn’t even drink that much.”
Cam pulled a chair out and sat down. “It’s fine. He wasn’t that loud.”
Kate placed a mug down on the table in front of her and poured some coffee. “You look like you could use this.”
“Hm, it was a…” She thought for the word. “Strange night.”
Kate’s eyes glanced at her wrist and then at the other once, the smirk growing on her face. When she looked back at Cam and saw the blush, the smile broadened. “So I see.”
Cam instinctively yanked her sleeves down. “That wasn’t what I meant.”
Kate turned away again to attend to the eggs. “I’m not asking for details.”
“Good, cos I’m not offering them,” Cam said quickly, lifting the mug to hide her embarrassment behind it.
“What details?” Cam’s mother asked as she breezed into the room, opening the fridge and pulling the jug of orange juice out.
“Nothing,” Cam said quickly, shooting a warning glance at Kate, who winked as she plated up scrambled eggs onto two plates.
“Did you want some?” Kate asked Pippa, offering the eggs.
“No, thanks love, the orange juice is fine for now. I’ll grab some toast later. I said that I’d pop up and help Michelle with the bubbas.”
“Okie dokie,” Cam said, sipping her coffee slowly and still avoiding eye contact, sleeves hooked with her thumbs.
Pippa eyed them both for a moment before sighing. “You two are up to something.”
“Nope, definitely not,” Cam answered quickly. She placed her cup down and almost spilled it. “Shit.”
“It’s fine. You keep your secrets.” Pippa grinned and turned, then over her shoulder she said, “I’ll get it out of your wife.”
Cam groaned and dropped her head to the table. “Do you want to talk about it?” Kate offered.
“Depends on what you think it is.”
Kate ate a mouthful of food. When she was finished chewing, she poured more coffee for Cam and got herself some water.
“I really doubt that your sex life is the reason for this sourpuss face you’ve got going on, and truly, I do not want details of that…ever. But whatever it is that’s bothering you, you can tell me.”
“I know I can. I just…I haven’t really processed it all yet.”
“Well, I am here…”
“Michelle wants to move here,” Cam spewed quickly. “Like…she wants to give everything up and move here, permanently.”
Kate sat back in her chair and looked at Cam. “And you don’t?”
“I don’t know what I want. I thought we were happy in LA. Everything is there, all our friends, our jobs, our home.”
“Home is where your heart is, Cam. And your heart is with Michelle and the kids…did she say why she wanted to move here?”
“Yeah, she’s thought it all through. She wants the kids to grow up here. To have a normal childhood, not a Beverly Hills one. She wants to give up acting! Can you imagine that? It was her dream and now…”
“Now she has a new dream?”
“Yeah. I guess she does. And the thing is, she’s happy here. I can see that. There’s no pressure for her to be this perfect human being. There are no photographers following her around. I get it. I just…”
“What do you want?”
“My wife to be happy, healthy...”
“But what do you want? What would you choose to do?”
“I’d stay in LA,” she admitted. “But it’s not about just me. I’m a unit now. We’re a package, a family, and I have to think about what is best for all of us, not just me. I can’t be selfish about this.”
“No, you can’t, and that is why I know you will make the right decision, for all of you.”
