Chapter 8 - Life
By Claire Highton-Stevenson
Cam wandered in from the beach and kicked off her shoes. It was a warm day for this time of the year. It was still early in the year, too early for swimming, but it was nice to just go for a run, or take a stroll with her family. She had to keep pinching herself every time she came in and heard them. It was the most surreal thing to happen to her, and she loved it. She found Michelle lying on the couch with Noah happily sleeping against her chest, his little hand gripped tightly around Michelle’s index finger.
“Comfy?”
Michelle grinned up at her. “Not really, but I don’t want to move. Look how cute he is when he sleeps like this,” she gushed.
Nodding, Cam searched the room. “Uh, has Darcy learned to walk already?”
“No, Maria has her in the kitchen. They’re making cookies.”
“Oh, right. Well, that is okay then. Put them to work early,” Cam joked. She moved towards the end of the couch, and Michelle lifted her legs to allow her space to sit in, placing her calves back down on her wife’s lap. Strong fingers instantly squeezed and pressed the muscles there as Cam started to massage. “How exactly is Maria making cookies with Darcy?”
Michelle chuckled. “Wait till you see it. She has Darcy wrapped up and swaddled in a sling wrap.”
“A sling what?”
“It’s a wrap that allows you to carry the baby close to your chest. It makes them feel swaddled,” Michelle explained quietly. Noah fidgeted a little but didn’t wake up.
“Oh, this I have got to see.” Cam laughed, lifting Michelle’s legs gently and standing up. “Would you like me to bring you back a drink, anything?”
“Yes, with a straw please.” She laughed, trying to lift her head and failing without disturbing Noah.
“Alright, I’ll be right back.”
It didn’t take many steps for the long legs of Camryn Thomas to reach the kitchen and for her to then take in the sight before her. She squeezed her lips together to stop the cackle that threatened to erupt as she watched Maria scoot back and forth to the music playing on the local radio station, Darcy completely unaware as she slept contentedly wrapped inside a colorful stretchy kind of material that wrapped around Maria as much as it did Darcy.
“This is just priceless,” Cam finally said. Maria spun around.
“Holy…Camryn, don’t sneak up on me like that.”
Laughing, Cam moved into the room and right up to her housekeeper, peeking down into the wrap and checking on her baby. “God, she is just gorgeous, isn’t she?”
Maria nodded. “She is, and so is Noah, but he likes to be quiet…this one, not so much.” She smiled and picked up her bowl to start stirring.
“I suppose you’ll be wanting a pay rise now,” Cam joked, but she was willing to actually pay up.
Maria turned to her. “I think you pay me enough; this one is on me. You did good, Cam. Real good.”
Cam grinned. She had Michelle, and now they had these two. Yeah, she had done good.
“Michelle wants a drink, so…you okay with her, or you want me to take her?”
Maria waved her off. “We’re good. We’re making snacks.”
Leaning in, Cam kissed the top of her head. “Thanks.” Then she grabbed two bottles of water and was gone, back to the lounge where neither Michelle nor Noah had moved.
“Can you believe our babies are a whole week old?” she said as she retook her seat, uncapping the water and poking a straw in through the hole.
Michelle sighed contentedly and took the bottle from her. “I know, I’m just so glad they’re here, and healthy…I worried for a while. I was thinking maybe there was something wrong with me,” she admitted quietly.
Cam turned to her. “Really?”
Michelle nodded silently.
“Well, nothing to worry about anymore. Two perfectly healthy little babies and one perfectly gorgeous Mama; that’s all I need.” She wriggled up and squeezed into the space between Michelle and the back of the sofa, wrapping her arm across Michelle’s stomach. “Did I tell you today how much I love you?”
Michelle giggled. “No.”
“Oh, how remiss of me. Well I do, I love you. With everything that I am.”
“I love you too.”
